Bo Burnham: Inside
Easily a life-changing film that perfectly captures life in 2020-2021.
I first saw Inside when it came out, and thought it was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ then. It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ now.
I’ve been following Bo Burnham’s work since he released the music video for “Words, Words, Words” in 2010. I was in middle school, and was a hip-hop fan, and Bo might as well have been Shakespeare. He’s a Renaissance man; talented not only in music, but in stand-up comedy, poetry & lyricism, performance, filmmaking, and intellect.
Not only does Inside perfectly capture the cultural zeitgeist thematically, Bo goes out of his way to make the visuals so crisp and meaningful, with excellent lighting and color choices. On top of this, every song slaps. Like, I found myself listening through the album multiple times, and still do, months after initial release. Even the outtakes are gold.
There’s too much to delve into with each individual track in the film to go into in this review. All I can say is that I don’t think I’ve ever been affected as much by a musical as Inside affected me with “That Funny Feeling” and then “All Eyes On Me.”
Beautiful masterpiece.
