The Lighthouse
Robert Eggers has crafted one of the finest films of the year. Patterson and Dafoe are unbelievably good. The almost square 1.19:1 aspect ratio immediately sets the claustrophobic atmosphere and the same feeling of being stuck on a “rock” iscolsted from all living things aside from the seagulls.
The black and white aesthetic give it these creepy otherworldly look. The use of black and white along with incredible cinematography and lighting create these breathtaking visuals that just keep you captivated the whole time. The films score is haunting and truly sents shivers down my spine everytime it was used throughout the film. There’s just so many bone chilling scenes that are unmatched by anything I’ve seen before.
The confusing and somewhat intimidating way the story is told really challenges the viewer. It’s drives you mad just like the characters in the film. This is definitely a film that almost demands repeat viewings to truly appreciate all that it offers.
