Brokeback Mountain
My review sucked absolutely fucking ass cheeks for last time but I think about this movie constantly. Recently I had a conversation with coworkers which involved one of them watching heated rivalry, we teased her and then my coworker brought up, “It’s like if she was watching Brokeback Mountain!” I had to genuinely step back for a moment because I completely forgot about how straight people view this movie. Asked him if he’d ever seen it and obviously he said no. Inspired my rewatch.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are phenomenal in this movie, the acting is so unbelievably tender and raw and each of them does a fantastic job conveying each character’s personalities. Heath Ledger’s facial expressions for Ennis is one of my favorite aspects of his character. He is so shy as himself and he’s truly so so sweet. Jake Gyllenhaal’s confidence as Jack and his playfulness ties in perfectly with Ennis. They have the best chemistry and this movie wouldn’t even be close to what it is without them both. Now onto the movie
Ennis and Jack’s relationship progression and how devastatingly long it is, is easily my favorite part of this film. Ennis is so hesitant in the beginning, and you easily feel his insecurity written all over his face. The way Jack slowly allows him to open up is so intimate. “You may be a sinner but I yet have had the opportunity,”
Tent scene is soo sweet to me. Filled with so much tension and initial fear. I love the way they don’t kiss but get so so close to it. I find it interesting how this scene is the one where most people poke fun, as if its some crazy ass sex scene even though there is barely any visuals, minimal sound and its almost entirely driven on the emotional aspect of it. I think this is a good example of how many people are completely unwilling to look at sex scenes as something intimate and telling about the characters. This scene quickly establishes that Jack Twist is confident and sure in his decision with Ennis and acknowledges that Ennis is fearful, uneasy, yet desperately wants it. Yes it’s sex, but it’s more telling of the characters than anything else and it sets up the rest of the film perfectly. Yet this scene is made a mockery of despite being so unbelievably tame ughh whatever. The second scene where they finally kiss, ohhh my god I could cry. Jack Twist so crazy for bottoming dry after eating a diet of only canned beans🕊️Ennis crying in the alleyway after Jack leaves only to immediately cut to him marrying alma. ohhh thats cinema. I like the time spent on them marrying women and settling down and also how differently they both handle it. Jack’s relationship with Lureen is actually semi-stable, again with Jack’s security in his sexuality bleeding into his marriage. I feel like he’s able to handle this role a lot better than Ennis. Ennis on the other hand is still filled with shame, his relationship is rocky unsure. He is distant, a bad husband, a bad father all because he is unwillingly to deal with his own emotions and when he cracks he cracks. Alma finds out through Ennis’ own recklessness with his secret. I feel so bad for Alma, she’s a great character. I love her scenes with Ennis cause despite the obvious of feeling bad for Ennis for the situation he is just so relentlessly horrible to her. The way Alma handles it is genuinely so tuff idc
Earl’s death being a highlight on how Ennis represses himself. His reasoning for only seeing Jack once every four years only for Jack to die in a similar fashion onhh dont even joke lad
“Sometimes I miss you so much, I can hardly stand it.” “I just can’t stand this anymore, Jack.” “He wanted his ashes spread on Brokeback Mountain,”
Whatever i love this movie. Guy who just likes to ramble. Anne Hathaway soooo hawt in this movie tho
