Bones and All
Beautiful and brutal. A unique romance in the way that only two lost people trying to survive in a world that wants nothing to do with them can be.
About hunger: for love, for belonging, for something real in a world that’s falling apart around them. It’s messy, intimate, and human in a way that got under my skin.
*“You don't think i'm a bad person?"
"All I think is that I love you."*Being deeply flawed, even feeling unlovable at times, but still being worthy of love. It’s pure, unconditional love and acceptance.
While Lee is carrying shame, fear, and self-doubt afraid that his flaws, past, or identity makes him unlovable or a bad person. He's asking for reassurance, but what he gets is something deeper: not denial of his flaws, but a total, unwavering, unconditional declaration of love.
All that matters, is that I love you.
Nothing else matters, because I love you.
It's the kind of love that doesn't try to fix or change you but holds you where you are without falter.
The cannibalism is raw, violent. There's blood, gore, eaters tearing people apart for their survival and pleasure. On the surface level, it’s a brutal metaphor but it’s also delicate. It’s quiet, gentle, and full of tenderness. Like love through gritted teeth. Like two people finding softness through each other trying to navigate a world that has only ever given them reasons to harden.
The violence doesn’t erase the intimacy it intensifies it. Every moment of tenderness feels earned. There’s guilt. So much of it. Heavy, inescapable. Lee and Maren don’t just do violent things, they live with the weight of them and fight to escape it but it follows and haunts. When you’ve seen the ugliest parts of yourself and someone still says “I love you,” despite the horrors you've done, that kind of love feels sacred.
Bones and All lives in that contradiction. Something so monstrous, yet so achingly human. A story about needing to consume, but also needing to be held. It’s about survival, yes but more than that, it’s about how love, even in the most broken places, can still feel gentle. Still feel holy.
Reminds me of the lyrics: "There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin." Something that's perceived as 'bad' could be so pure shared between two people that love and understand each other.
I’ve thought about the different metaphors cannibalism represents in this film: addiction, where the hunger controls you more than you control it, mutual destruction while being with another addict; mental illness, the parts of yourself you try to hide or suppress to seem “normal”; inherited/ generational trauma, passed down like a curse you never asked for and trying to break those cycles; when Maren visits her mother. She's born with this part of herself that doesn't allow her to show or feel love without violence often leaving her abandoned and lonesome (by her father and friends). The shame of feeling like an outsider, or the shame of wanting something the world tells you is wrong.
Or maybe the cannibalism could represent something different for each character, Sully yearning for a connection, Lee is an addict, Maren has inherited issues from her Mother.
To me, as much as I would love for cannibalism to be a metaphor for intense love. Its not just that. It also feels like this intense love that cannot be expressed properly because of the past. Damaging people around you, not being able to change and feeling hopeless about it because of the trauma, the shame, the fear. It’s about wanting to love without hurting anyone and realizing you don’t know how.
You end up damaging the people around you, not out of cruelty or will, but because you’re carrying something you never asked for. And you can’t stop.
You can’t change it.
And after a while, you start to feel hopeless about even trying.
That’s what the hunger is. Not just desire but inherited pain, passed through bloodlines. Loving someone the way you wished you could've been loved. Staying through it all even when you have nothing left to give, a final act of love from someone who has nothing left to offer but themselves. It’s not about destruction but becoming part of the person you love in the only way you know how.
If I can’t be saved, let me be yours.
“I want you to love me and eat me, bones and all.”It's so raw because it’s not just romantic it’s desperate. it’s devastating. Not idealized nor clean but honest. Messy. Human.
