F1
DECENT 8.
for long i'd helmed brad pitt as my goat actor. to be honest, this placement was rooted mostly vanity. pitt doesn't have the filmography to boast such a title... at least until sometime in the 2010s. the brother locks in with films like Ad Astra, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and now, F1 The Movie.
perhaps acting is a career that only, in theory, ages with time. pitt knows this, with his roles leaning into his age — then again, he flaunts the "beware of an old man in a profession where men die young" mantle in the characters that the portrays.
no different is the story of aging in a fleeting industry through pitt's sonny hayes, whose career is explored across the span of nine races. a return to form (with a sloppy, but promising audition), then a stubborn partner (which jeopardizes those he cares about and those he wants to care about), then a "hate the game, not the player"-esque asshole (as per the bad boy pistons), then a concerned mentor (who sees himself in others), then a "has been" who has prove his potential and secure his legacy against a "never was" accusation, then a self-doubting and superstitious racer, then a "for all the marbles" ace card.
it's possible pitt hopes to reflect through F1 The Movie on his past sins of degenerate vanity and disappointing familyhood. but his (supposed) intention is somewhat masked by silly banter from the supporting cast (javier bardem's ruben cervantes and damson idris' joshua pearce) and by the genuinely clenching action.
was very pleased with F1 The Movie, and this has been my favorite film of 2025 by far.
