Super
“That’s where we are now, right? In between the panels?”
I got curious again and decided to revisit Super, The second directorial effort from the brilliant James Gunn, and I just need to stress, this is something everyone should see before they die, it’s so important. You don’t need to like it. But by god you need to see it.
When I first watched super it was under the guise of assuming it’d be like Guardians of the Galaxy because James Gunn made it, and I was wonderfully surprised, this movie is Gross, weird, fucked up, and absolutely crosses the line, fuck man, it throws the line out the window. But back then I refused to believe anyone could hate it, or even dislike it, and after rewatching it, I can now truly say I was wrong.
Super is absolutely phenomenal, and I adore it, but now I can completely understand why people don’t like it, the movie isn’t for everyone, it’s not even for the majority of people who want to watch it. It was made for the small few who wanted something like this in their world. I wouldn’t be where I am with screenwriting nor would I have my dedication to film without it.
And I’ll be Frank, it’s weird to dedicate my Scripting knowledge to an indie movie from 2011 but there are some movie that made us who we are, this is one of mine.
When I told my friend to watch it, he did and I was shocked and appalled when he came back with almost nothing but negatives for it, and I was genuinely personally offended by that, but now I can see why he didn’t like it. I understand. Like I said a few paragraphs ago, this movie isn’t for everyone, and I don’t think this was his particular cup of tea, and dude that’s okay. Shit, I respect the hell out of him for that.
This is the rawest most unfiltered James Gunn has ever been, and I loved every last second of it, and it only gets better every time I watch it, I won’t give spoilers… because I hope someone reads this, and watches this movie. Goes and checks it out. Even if they don’t like it, I still hope they at least see it, because this is one of those special movies that only comes along, every so often. And you shouldn’t miss that experience, for the world.
