Poor Things
An absolutely twisted and fantastic dark fairytale.
Adapted from the book of the same name, Yorgos allows every part of his strange and whimsical mind to take hold of this work. The 19th century fashion and environments melded perfectly with this almost 'steampunk-esque' world.
The cinematography is amazing as always. The signature style of whip pans, fish eye lenses and long takes help enthrall you in a world of wonder and mystery. The choice to have black & white cinematography before Bella venture into the world is a great choice.
Emma Stone gives a career-defining performance. Her curiosity, brashness and ever evolving intelligence throughout is a delight to witness. Mark Ruffalo is such a hilarious and pathetic asshole; perfect casting imo. Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael; everyone was at the height of their game.
The score was this perfect blend of hypnotic and bizarre. It's chaotic nature perfectly reflected Bella's personality and journey. It felt like I was discovering a whole new genre of music and my god, was it incredible. Props to Jerskin Fendrix.
Bella Baxter's journey from infant to adult (in both mind and body) is one of self discovery. Throughout, we witness Bella grow to becoming the woman she wants to be, albeit; constantly coerced and ridiculed by the men around her and wider society.
Ultimately, they can't stop her. Her journey of love, sex, freedom and identity is deeply human and something we can all agree, is truly special and unique to our species. We should all aspire to be like Bella. Never change who you are and always remain true to yourself.
