Winter Light
Just wanna mention how everything in this movie looks like it should be in b+w anyways, which makes it seem so much cooler. And that I love a religious film where people actually realise that it's a load of bs (yes I understand it's only a film), but I do love how they portray it. I especially liked the scene where Tomas was coughing holding onto the handrail, and then he bent down and the light shone over him through the window. Incredible interior inside the church and they're always so well made because they think if they build it perfectly they go to heaven, but now they're just for generations to look at and enjoy, which is a better reason to make it imo (I love churches they're so cool, just not what they're for) and the use of the light not only gives this supposed sign of god or whatever but it makes the room feel more alive and it's just beautiful to watch because the light emphasises every nook and cranky inside; beautiful cinematography in that little scene. Also loved the scene when they went to the place where the man took his life. The trees and the river and the way the water flows and the rocks along the bank and the way the bridge is built out of trunks and the car and the snow and the fits and the aesthetics; so fucking pretty (just in that particular scene, whole movie is just as good too though). Kinda reminds me of Twin Peaks, but just better in every way.
"Now I'm free. Free at last. I had this fleeting hope, that everything wouldn't turn out to be illusions, dreams and lies."
I could turn this review into a massive rant about what I don't like about religion and how this movie helps explain a portion of my opinion (particularly the letter scene); but I understand that there might be some religious people reading this and I wouldn't wanna disrespect them (because why would I anyways, unless they treat people as indifferent and are prejudiced because a certain someone doesn't fit they're 'gods' image 🤷).
Overall really beautiful, thought-provoking, cold film and I wouldn't say I could relate to it but I agree with a hell of a lot of it. Cheers burgerman.
