Possession

Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession is one of my all time favorite films and I decided to rewatch it today after hearing Sam Neill passed away. After rewatching this I feel that my opinion of the upcoming remake being unnecessary has not changed. Possession feels so deeply tied to the time in which it was made, from the frequent camera shots of the Berlin Wall to the apocalyptic ending triggering this haunting and lingering existential dread.
The performances in this are so masterful and really stick with me with Isabelle Adjani giving what I view as her best performance and Sam Neill also gives the best performance of his career here. The constant blue look to the film really gives this melancholic atmosphere and tone throughout which I think served the film brilliantly as well.

Overall, Possession is among my all time favorite films and is extremely well acted, written, shot, and has one of my favorite endings of film history.
