Eraserhead
So completely uninviting that, paradoxically, you can't help but be drawn in. The few lines of dialogue range from awkward to completely nonsensical. The landscapes and set design are harsh, and the sound design constantly unnerving. Completely inscrutable symbolism and imagery. Characters give each other looks and reactions that build a sort of tension that never resolves, even after the movie is done. There is clearly an unreliable narrative, but to what degree is unknown.
The movie outright refuses to help you "get it", so I understand the hate, but I buy into the hype. It IS weird for the sake of being weird, but it's also so earnest in its weirdness, so singular, so clearly representative of the tastes of its creator, that I didn't feel as if it was condescending or pretentious.
I loved the hell out of this one and am excited to watch more of David Lynch's stuff.
