Superman
Okay, for real this time. James Gunn did a great job.
Let's start with the visuals. Experience-wise, i've always had a great time every time i watched this one, and one of the main reasons is its vibrance. It's colorful, but not too much. Immaculate balance between that comic feeling and the real world. I'm not saying that every superhero movie should be colorful, but this is Superman we're talking about. His suit is literally red and blue, it has to be vibrant. And i'm so glad that we're starting to break free of that bland, colorless comic book movies trend we were somehow obsessed with in the 2010s. Aside from the color, the cinematography is incredible. I don't know if this is James Gunn's specialty or he just happened to have worked with the same cinematographer from GoTG Vol. 3, but there's this certain way to move the camera around which i really like. I don't know, it just feels unique. It works really well blended with the colorful visual, making it quite a sight for my sore eyes. The vfx, well, why would i give it 5 stars if they're bad? It's one of the most essential parts of sci-fi, especially comic book / superhero movies. Of course it's great.
Now for the plot. I can't compliment them enough for how they managed to plant a ton of build-ups (because of its role as the "kickstarter" of the DCU) while still keeping the story compact. I feel like there can be a lot of projects in the future where you only need to watch one movie, which is Superman. And that's how to start a universe. Story-wise, a quite generic good guy-vs-bad guy, but with more depth to it thanks to Superman's consistent mentality of "no one gets hurt" which led him to suffer the consequences of impulsively meddling in between a geopolitical conflict between two countries while also struggling to deal with his Kryptonian origins. And guess who caused all that? Lex Luthor. Just pure hate with a passion. That's how you write a villain.
For the pacing, i'd say it's pretty neat. I mean, i've watched this movie 5 times, and i never get bored for a single moment. The dialogues are written very well, it has done a good job at keeping my attention and interest on the scene.
I think that's all i can say about this movie. My biggest thanks to James Gunn and all the people who helped him make this movie happen. 10/10.
