Fargo

It’s snowing here again which definitely caught me by surprise. Not only that, it’s gonna be about 10 inches of snow, which is unheard of around here. The last time it snowed I watched The Hateful Eight and I came to the decision of watching that movie after trying to decide between it and this movie. Naturally, when it began to snow this time around, I knew I had to watch Fargo. Anyway, this movie is loads of fun, yet it’s full of blood, murder, and bad people. The Coen brothers are truly masters of their craft. I don’t know how they are able to seamlessly integrate comedy into a movie that should be an intense drama, but they do and it’s amazing. From Steve Buscemi’s character being referred to as funny looking numerous times to his partner who doesn’t say much, Fargo is all about the little details that make this feel oddly cozy. This is about murders that occurred in a small town and it very much has a small town feel to it. After watching this so many times, I almost feel as though I know these characters and it’s strangely comforting. The snowy atmosphere adds to the overall coziness and that is thanks to Roger Deakins and his incredible cinematography. The music is also super good and very distinct. What I love most about this movie is how the Coen brothers are able to tell a tale all about greed, misunderstandings, and the dangers of acting on pure impulse while also showing a life devoid of those things through Marge and Norm’s sweet little life together. William H. Macy delivers such a good performance and is always so goddamn nervous. He isn’t sure of himself and doesn’t even seem to have a good grasp on who he is. Frances McDormand is equally as good and is able to turn a mundane performance into something extraordinary. Overall, Fargo is a snowy delight that just so happens to be all about MURDER. The ending with the wood chipper never fails to irk me. I know most of this isn’t actually based on a true story, but I still can’t believe the stuff with the wood chipper happened for real. It’s crazy!!
