Se7en
First 5 Star in a while.
Se7en is a true anomaly that at the risk of sounding cheesy breaks all the rules. We never witness the murders, and we don’t even meet the antagonist until after everything has already been set in motion. The film’s climax is literally just a car ride, yet it’s one of the most gripping sequences in modern cinema. The ending isn’t a twist, but it’s also not telegraphed. It resolves the story in the only way it ever could. It feels complete, yet still leaves you stunned.
What’s impressive is how restrained the film is. Many people swear they saw Tracy’s head in the box, but nothing is actually shown. That false memory is a testament to how immersive and emotionally overwhelming the final act isviewers feel the same gut punch David does.
