The broken are the more evolved.
This film unsettles me in the best possible way. Every time I watch it, it sinks deeper under my skin. It feels like something raw, uncomfortable and strangely emotional all at once.
Anya Taylor-Joy delivers such a quiet, wounded performance. There’s so much restraint in the way she moves, watches and reacts, making everything feel painfully real. But James McAvoy is on another level entirely. What he does here is truly astonishing. The precision, the shifts, the physicality, the voice and facial expressions changes, every personality feels fully formed and fully alive. It feels human, fractured and terrifyingly believable. It’s genuinely one of the most impressive acting showcases I’ve seen.
What stays with me the most though is the heart of the story. Beneath the horror, there’s something deeply moving about a broken girl who doesn’t become cruel, doesn’t become hollow, but instead becomes observant, resilient and strong in her own quiet way. The film treats trauma as something that scars, but also something that sharpens. That idea gives the whole story a strange emotional weight.
And then there’s the Beast. The concept alone is chilling: something hidden even from the other personalities, yet born from all of them at once. The tension surrounding it builds into something almost mythic. When it finally emerges, it feels both horrifying and inevitable.
I know the ending divides people, but for me it only elevates everything. I can’t find a single moment that doesn’t work. It’s intense, tragic, frightening and somehow comforting at the same time. Every rewatch just reinforces how special it is, or at least to me as I feel oddly attached to it and somehow relating to me.
