*Wow. First thoughts? Transcending the game. Kane does an excellent job of taking this from a digital project he made from an IMAGE. an image. and transforming it into a full movie. Everything in this movie was really great overall and the psychological mystery throughout the whole film was also great. Horror wise, could be more horror-y but it got the job done. Just a reminder, Kane Parsons is 20 years old making this film. Wild.
To add to this review also, this is the first horror movie I've ever seen in theatres and overall, way better experience than a laptop and bed. As for the cinematography, it was really well made. If I did hear it correctly online the set was all made in real life so props to them for making that a set. It looked really good in my eyes and CGI was great. Only CGI part that didn't look that good was the sky in the real world mainly when Clark went over to Kat and Bobby's place to get them to record the backrooms. Other than that, the backrooms themself was really really well. Like it felt real to watch. I could add that the wall that connected the real world to the backrooms when they went through was alright but compared to other times its been tried it wasn't that bad at all.
Now, for the movie, as someone who only watched the Backrooms (Found Footage) episode on Youtube some parts didn't really make sense but I started to understand as it went through. I do have many gaping questions for the film like; How long was Clark in there before Mary came along? Where was Mary at the end of the movie when the scientist started asking questions? Where was the entity and why was the main antagonist their own selves? Why did Clark die that way? For the Clark one though, I have came to the conclusion that he was going insane from being in there and trapped with his thoughts. I believe they're making a Backrooms II though so I hope some of the questions can be answered hopefully.
For the acting portion, I think it was really good. Chiwetel played his role really good and in the scene where him and Mary were in his old house he played his character excellently and it seemed real. As for one part though, there was the scene where Kat and Bobby went though the door and they were acting suprised it really didn't feel that real but hey, they are trying to act like young adults in the 90's and I don't know how they act so I'll let it slide... Mary played her part good aswell also. As for Pirate Clark, holy mackeral how did they make Robert Bobroczkyi look like that? In my opinion, props to the makeup artists for turning him black and his face into Beetlejuice.
Overall, really great amazing movie. As for one more thing, I love the addition of Kat wearing flip flops as a fellow flip flop rocker. But besides that point, I loved this movie. As my first horror film I've ever watched in theatres, it really sets the tone for future horror movies to come. Kane Parsons did such an amazing job making this movie come to life and for A24 to even give him the chance is astonishing in itself. Definitely a new top 10 favorite and wish I had watched it with someone else.
