Yi Yi
really strange viewing experience with this one.
this is easily amongst the three most beautifully shot movies i’ve ever seen; every static frame is a masterpiece and it has some of my favorite editing choices ever put to film. as if that weren’t enough, even upon first viewing, I recognize this as having some of the most memorable and heavy-hitting lines of dialogue i’ve had the pleasure of hearing/reading.
even still, a lot of this felt like a slog and I left wanting more from each character’s individual narrative.
the more I look back on Yi Yi, the more I appreciate its sheer magnitude and ability to juggle with so much. I can’t shake the feeling that I should’ve liked this more than I did; especially because I’ve never left a movie wanting to immediately rewatch it the way I did with this.
somewhere in these 174 minutes might exist my favorite movie of all time, i’m just not sure i’ve found it yet.
