Without Words
Portuguese & English review
English-
Senza parole (1979) by Dino Risi, by Guilherme Pinheiro.
One of the most powerful short films I have ever seen, and one that truly makes you believe in love. As the premise itself suggests, even without understanding each other's language—in a chance encounter between a young Italian flight attendant and a foreign passenger—the two characters manage to connect in an emotionally overwhelming way. In the hands of another filmmaker, this setup could easily be interpreted as merely physical or superficial, which would cause the narrative to lose much of its inherent strength. However, I did not view it that way at all: the physical attraction is merely the vessel for a far deeper, transcendent intimacy that defies any linguistic barrier.
Dino Risi's greatest triumph in this short—a moment of pure poetic lyricism amidst the fierce satire of the commedia all'italiana anthology I Nuovi Mostri—lies in his ability to condense the weight of a lifetime of passion into a matter of minutes. The direction is remarkably delicate and elegant, relying on glances, subtle gestures, and quiet moments to craft a space of absolute vulnerability between the two characters. Risi shoots affection with an almost painful sensitivity, balancing the lightness of romance with a lingering melancholy that hangs over the fleeting nature of their encounter. It is a flawless cinematic exercise on how film needs no words to communicate what matters most, culminating in an emotionally devastating payoff that cements this short as a genuine masterpiece.
