Fences
Viola Davis just performed one of the best performances oat holy shit.
Opening scene was fantastic, the whole up cheering vibe they had at the beginning had me cracking up. The whole family dynamic was amazing. I found it incredible that they chose the background of Troy (Denzel) to be so complicated yet simple and predictable for that era in history.
Denzel Washington was such a beast in this, powerhouse to the max. I will say it every time: best actor imo nou doubt about, only DDL is debatable but he would still end up winning in that debate if you ask me. He gave an Oscar worthy peformance but for the first time I think there was a better performance in his powerhouse movie.
Viola Davis, couldn’t name a more deservingly Oscar winning performance. That monologue she gave was such transcending and grounded at the same time. Too realistic it made me feel sick to feel her hope fade away and turn devastated. Just overall the dialogue in this movie is amazing.
All the character arcs are great, the “like him” and abusive repetitive signals are such common but yet tragic things to see from that era.
Denzel is probably in that debate to of best actor that is a director for 10% of their filmography too. Maybe Ben affleck comes kinda close but the names aren’t really popping up rn kinda tired.
Reason why i gave this movie 4 and a half stars is the grounded and way to realistic elements that ive seen add to that Viola and Denzel starring of each other like the two powerhouse that they are and layered family dynamics.
Feel kinda miserable now going to bed even after seeing such an incredible movie……
