The Matrix
*Favorite Films*
I'm not sure what I was on when I first watched The Matrix years ago and even considered giving it anything but five stars. My younger self was probably too stupid to understand it.
I definitely forgot how cool ninety nine percent of this film is. That doesn't only include the action sequences. The characters, the mind-bending world that the Wachowski's created, the amazing score and soundtrack, the outfits, the script (which was a serious highlight for me this time around). Everything fits perfectly. There's a reason the action is the most talked about aspect of this series though. It's incredible. Even though some other films have taken inspiration from it, few have had similar success. The crucial part of The Matrix's action scenes are how they are integral to the plot and Neo's progression as a character. He's not just dodging bullets and running up walls. He's "beginning to believe".
The one percent that hasn't clicked with me yet is Neo and Trinity's rationship. There just isn't enough tome with them together in my opinion for Trinity to fully fall in love with Neo. The prophecy is an important piece of it, but it still feels a bit rushed to me. It's the tiniest complaint and is by no means worth bumping this down to 4.5 stars.
What an amazing time from start to finish. Even though the sequels are generally disliked, I can't wait to get into them.
