Phantom Thread
This might genuinely be the greatest film I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It feels wrong to give it just 5 stars because it’s so perfect that it’s on its own level. I’m going to try and write a cohesive review discussing just the technical elements as to not give anything away, because if anyone is reading this and hasn’t seen this movie I strongly implore you to watch it immediately.
The sound design was so impeccable that I genuinely felt nauseous. The sounds of needles piercing fabric, crackling fire, pencil hitting paper, and footsteps on wood created a sense of realism and a beautiful contrast that grounded the stunning soundtrack (which is so powerful that at times, I felt my heart beating in rhythm with it).
Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance is insanely powerful. His entire cadence held this magnetism that captivated me from the very beginning to the very end. Vicky Krieps’s performance was equally impressive, if not better. I genuinely felt every emotion Alma experienced throughout the film.
Don’t even get me started on the fashion; I need every single dress in this movie yesterday.
There was so much to love about this film that I can’t even write it all in one review. I’m going to need to rewatch it as soon as possible and take notes on everything.
Kudos to PTA for this one; it’s an instant favorite for me. I won’t be getting over this anytime soon.
