Sinners
I want to give this 5 stars so bad… let’s get into it!
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a southern gothic epic that unfolds over the course of one day. The 1920s scenery is beautiful especially when complimented by the blues-centric soundtrack. This cast is stacked and every single member delivers. Hailey Steinfeld is MESMERIZING. Michael B. Jordan delivers at playing twins with contrasting personalities. The overall story is a feast for vampire and mythology fans alike. It’s also low-key about how immigration helped music genres evolve. I loved the Blues vs Bluegrass motif! Southern gothic vampires are my favorite sub genre of vampire (stand back Count Orlock, Remmick is much hotter and more enticing than you’ll ever be). Fans of Midnight Mass and Interview with The Vampire (show) will eat this up! Their spiritual inspiration is felt here. It also has a lot to say about race and talent suppression.
Like I said, I really really wish I could give this 5 stars because there is SO MUCH to love, but I do feel it could have been better in a few ways…
#1, this is one of the few times I feel that a directors cut could make this movie perfect. It spans 2hrs 17mins already but I wanted more build up, and evenly paced development (specifically with the vampires) the first scene we get of them is a bit underwhelming, and even at the climax I feel as though we didn’t see them to their fullest potential. Speaking of the climax, it was short lived and the penultimate battle could have been even more epic as well as more emotionally affective.
Overall, I love this movie. It is definitely the best of the year so far, and I hope to see more like this from Ryan Coogler!
