Le Mans
After watching Ferrari's 2nd victory in a row on Le Mans since 58 years ago, I decided to watch this film as a part of a victorious celebration. Before I saw the actual 24 hour Le Mans race, this film gave me an idea what the race is all about.
As it was filmed during the 1976 24-hour Le Mans, it is one of the most prestigious races to in motorsports date. For those who want to understand, each team has three drivers, sharing a vehicle and one of them take turns during the race. Instead of speed, they focus on the car’s stamina and endurance within the 24-hour mark. Once the vehicle is crashed, it is retired from race.
It perfectly represents the atmosphere of what a "Le Mans" race should be. From blinding lights in the night and the wet track during the rainy day. Not only from the track, but the people attending to watch the race, the commentators, the pit crew and most importantly, the next drivers who are competiting. Even the problems occur during the race, like high risks coming from the weather conditions and accidents.
The short use of dialogue compliments well for this film. Great use of sound such as the revving engines, loud booming voice of the commentators from the speaker, terrible car crashes, and the silence that keeps you at the edge of the seat. Even the editing of its fast-paced cuts and zooms showing the intensity of the race. Especially use of practical effects appeared to be realistic, as if those accidents happened in an archive footage. Really impressed with McQueen’s dedication to keep this film realistic as possible.
There are two stories in the film on track and off track. The rivalry between Ferrari and Porsche, and the romantic relationship of Steve McQueen's character and Elga Andersen as his partner (WAG). All of these stories occur in one place which makes this race so significant .
No other motorsport film could ever top "Le Mans" did. Anyways, Forza Ferrari Sempre!! &:
