Interstellar
Plot
A next generation space odyssey made by the next generation of legendary film directors.
I decided this needed a rewatch. After polling many of my friends and coworkers, I was surprised by how many listed this film as an all-time favorite. While Nolan films generally were mentioned often, this one the most. What is it about this film that attracts such a broad audience to love it so deeply?
Is it the sheer scope of it? The immensity of an epic that can only be done justly on a big film screen.
Is it the theme of connection between love and family? The struggle inherent in humankind to consider a deontological vs utilitarian ethic.
Maybe we just like space, or Dylan Thomas, or cautionary tales of global warming, or of course… high stake plot lines.
Clearly it’s all the above. I was surprised how fast I felt the pacing was this re-watch. This movie doesn’t have time to slow down — it’s constantly on to the next scene, the next moment, the next challenge. The film introduces dozens of conflicts and proceeds to resolve each in time, a very satisfying effect for the viewer.
My favorite part of this movie is the climax, Nolan’s willingness to visually present something in the 3rd dimension that feels so far beyond.
