The Selection
There’s a lot of dystopian media out there that’s inspired by the hunger games, and this one is no exception- except this is absolute dogshit. It took me a good while to try to find this TV episode (at first I thought it was a film, but it turns out it’s a cancelled TV show), and I can see why it got cancelled. The number of parallels to the hunger games is insane; it’s almost laughable how similar they are. The main girl- being brunette, able to sing, rebellious, and not wanting to submit herself to society- is an exact copy of Katniss Everdeen, but at least Katniss is relevant & is an enjoyable character.
I also think they took inspiration from Gale and Peeta but switched them around for Prince Maxon and Aspen, as they don’t suit their personalities at all. But also, the leading girl (who’s called fucking America, like what kind of dumbass name is that????) is in love with Aspen, who gives off major Peeta energy, but is clearly meant to be portrayed as Gale.
Aspen is a more enjoyable character in ten minutes (even though he’s not meant to be likable) than America is in the whole episode, and that is saying something
Their budget must’ve been crazy low, because it looked like they filmed all their scenes in two locations, and the background actors look like they were dragged off the streets, as they actually cannot act.
This was the longest 45 minutes of my life; this TV show was trying to do everything and nothing all at once. I understand Aspen wanting to be a soldier, and leaving America- because America is annoying as fuckkkk and trying too hard to be Katniss.
Katniss and Peeta, sweetie, I’m so sorry those Shein ahh characters wanna be you so badly. You deserve better.
