Barbie
“Humans only have one ending. Ideas live forever.”
First, i have start by saying the fabulous Greta Gerwig has hit the jackpot once again! She has proven time and time again that she is here to stay. She is going 3-for-3. Second, the soundtrack was fantastic. So much talent was poured into the hilariously satirical yet spectacular album that is sure to win many awards on its own. The standouts for me are Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’ and Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’. They perfectly portray how expansive the emotional scope of this film was, equally fun as it was moving. Third, the entire cast was stellar and chalk filled with icons; Helen Mirren as the narrator was unexpected but instantly iconic. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were wonderful in their roles and I think there could be an Oscar campaign brewing.
For the film itself, i think this is one of the best summer blockbuster in recent history! From it’s marvelous set pieces to it’s giant dance numbers, this is one for the books. It plays into the childlike spirit of Barbie while asking mature, existential questions like ‘what were we made for?’ It has a surprisingly deep message of growing up and finding our place in the world. While it criticizes constructs like toxic masculinity or the patriarchy, it also highlights the importance of human connection, and celebrates the beauty of being alive. I have nothing but praise for this film.
