Sinners
DUDE. DUDEEEEEE.
It’s a slow build, but it really earns it, once it gets going it’s fucking electric. A+ for worldbuilding/characters, the setting is so lively and the ensemble was so well cast, great chemistry all around. The twins are such great characters, loved Michael B. Jordan's double performance.
Absolute favourite scene is Sammie’s performance with the spirits. Mind-blowing soundtrack, fantastic visuals, and worked excellently as a turn into the horror-thriller second half. I also loved any scene with Wunmi Mosaku, I have so much respect for the amount of care that the writers put into their portrayal of her hoodoo culture, and her relationship with Smoke was so mesmerizing. Their first scene together was just, mwah! The way they treat each other, their history together so visible and vulnerable, so so good.
Unfortunately found the editing very annoying. That TikTok centered camera was noticeable and they seemed to think I was too stupid to retain information. Like, “I guess I was the only person he couldn’t kill” can’t just be a line on its own, we have to deliver it through voiceover of a clip you saw like 15 minutes ago! Remember that guy who sold you the property at the start? Have to replay old footage of him the next time we mention him! Better replay footage of this woman’s daughter so you know she’s worried about her! Better replay footage of the baby grave so you remember their baby died! Maybe if it was new footage it would bother me less, but the recycling just made it cornyyyyy.
I don’t want a text wall about a single nitpick to take away from what an overall incredible movie this is, I’m just better at explaining negatives than positives. It also doesn’t help that I don’t have any coherent thoughts on the themes yet. Such is the life of a hater slash dumbass. But it is good, very good, please go see it!!
(I ran into the parents of the actor who played Bert outside my theatre. They seemed very nice and very giddy that everyone was leaving the theatre happy. Cute ending to the experience!)
