Hot Fuzz
i’m giving hot fuzz a solid 4/5. it’s 2024 and rewatching the second installment of edgar wright’s cornetto trilogy just proves the man is the final boss of visual comedy. it’s a massive flex—simultaneously a perfect action movie parody and a high-intensity slasher-mystery.
simon pegg and nick frost are an absolute dream team. pegg as nicholas angel is absolute peak; he nails that stiff, elite 'main character' energy of a super-cop who’s too good for his own job. then you have nick frost as danny butterman, the action-movie-obsessed partner who brings all the heart. their chemistry is 10/10 vibes, especially when they’re jumping over fences or firing two guns in the air.
the editing is the biggest flex of all. wright’s signature quick cuts and sound design make even a scene of someone signing paperwork or pouring a pint feel like a high-stakes heist. it makes the pacing fast and loud, and the final shootout in the village square is a total masterclass in michael bay-style action but with british humor.
the only reason it’s not a perfect 5 is that the first half is a bit of a slow-burn while it establishes the sandford nwa conspiracy. it’s smart, but the tonal shift into full-blown carnage in the third act is so intense it almost makes the beginning feel like a different movie. plus, some of the gore gags are surprisingly brutal—even for 2024.
overall, it’s a bold, stylish, and viscerally funny ride. it’s pure 'buddy cop' energy with actual balls. if you want a comedy that actually cares about the action, this is the one
