Trainspotting
Goddamn this movie rocks. Crazy that it can balance having the most horrific shit and simultaneously never stop being an enjoyable ride. There’s a strong case to be made that this film is responsible for me wanting to someday make films. Danny Boyle is so under appreciated. That’s all I have for now I’m gonna go to bed. Nighty night.
Edit: im awake now and getting ready to fly to Florida so I’ll add some additional thoughts on this movie.
1: I guess I never realized before how much this movie fits into the 90’s gen-x slacker movie canon. In some ways this felt like a Scottish version of Singles or Dazed and Confused. Like I knew it was an ensemble but forgot how much of this is purely vignetted snapshots of these junkies just hanging around. I remember it being more plot heavy than it actually is.
2: the music is incredible—some banger needle drops.
3: just want to reiterate what I said last night about Danny Boyle really being under appreciated. For some strange reason when we talk about modern auteurs, I feel the absence of his name. Not only does he have prestige hits, cult classics, and (somewhat) blockbusters, he has a truly unique visual and auditory style. The way he’s able to make something like 127 hours—a film primarily set in one tiny location—and have it have the same frenetic energy as Trainspotting is truly a marvel that I’m sad to see go overlooked by most cinephiles out there. He’s always been a top 10 filmmaker for me and in the weeks leading up to 28 years later I plan on diving deep into his catalog again.
