Twinless
THIS is how you make a movie. Goddamn. They cooked with this.
First of all I was NOT familiar with Dylan O’Brien’s game at ALL. Never watched Teen Wolf or Maze Runner but I’m a chronic Tumblr user so I feel like the man is family at this point. And good god he can act. His performance blew me away.
I loved how I thought I knew the premise of this movie but they twisted it so beautifully that I didn’t expect it. The writing was so clever but not at all pretentious. Actually the whole thing felt like a bunch of humble people got together and said “What if we did this? I dunno, just a thought, don’t take my word for it.” Everything just WORKS without being overbearing.
The way we’re introduced to Roman is wonderful, but our introduction to Dennis left me awestruck. My mouth was agape for at least 95% of the sequence. And through this, getting to know him was such a heart-wrenching joy.
I’m obsessed with the way they chose to explore the absence of a sense of self through Roman and Dennis respectively. The stark contrast of their situations paired with the way they get each other and feel so similar? Oh my god. It was SUCH a joy to see it unravel.
I laughed so much, I cried way more than I thought I would cry, I even felt the cringe so deep down in my bones I had to cover my face. This story is so unique but so deeply painful and beautiful at the same time. And nothing is more interesting than an antagonist that you can’t help but pity.
I even liked the ending, as ambiguous as it was. It carried that same hopelessly hopeful feeling that surrounds you during the entire film. I truly hope a lot of people watch this so they make more films like it. Such a satisfying watch.
