Holy shit dude a 1984 inspired movie written by my glorious king Tom Stoppard and directed by the same Gilliam that made Monty Python and the Holy Grail?! And not only all that it’s also drowning in themes of anti-consumerism, bureaucracy and might I even say McCarthyism?? I’ve got such a hard-on for this film it’s actually absurd.
Some of the ways the motif’s play out is wonderfully done - personal faves being the paperwork and the cosmetics - and the movie manages to include so much to dissect without having it be too convoluted. The set design in this really stands out to me as it works really well to create the sanitised feel that comes with living within the system; similar thoughts with the comedy, done pretty well and in a way that conveys the same depressing humour derived from the situation we are currently in and have been since the creation of capitalism.
One little tid-bit I did have was Jill and Sam’s relationship, it felt like they didn’t treat Jill as a real character and it did kinda take me out of the movie a bit.
Thank you, Sam for recommending this, you know me too well.
Also fuck Reagan, fuck Thatcher and I hate writing reviews and I love larping
