Mulan
This is such an important film, not just to me personally but to the world. It brought me close to tears because it is not just an animated Disney film. It is an animated Disney film with a message. As a child I never thought about why I liked this movie so much, I just thought it looked cool and I liked the story. But now, looking back I can see why, growing up queer I experienced exclusion, discrimination and feeling that I didn’t belong and Fa Mulan is with me on this boat. It showed me that not ‘fitting in’ in a critical and highly prejudiced society is okay, and one can accomplish so many things breaking these social rules. That is why now, I look at this movie and see it so much more than simply as a film. I will recommend this movie to any little person who feels like they don’t belong or are labeled as ‘other’ by society whether it be because of the color of their skin, person they love, weight, height, gender expression, religion or any kind of bullshit that society comes up with to demean you for. It is for the same reason I believe reflection is the best Disney song of all time (sharing the throne with Color of the Wind from pochantos because making me choose is like making me choose between my two children) not just because of its beautiful vocals and message but also beautiful visuals. (Also watching this older made me realize Mushu was low-key a war criminal like…)
