Pride & Prejudice
I've always had a soft spot for Pride & Prejudice, even if I didn't realize it until recently. My three sisters used to put on movies like Emma, Sense & Sensibility, and Jane Eyre nonstop when we were kids, and I would constantly complain every single time. No fights or action, just talking in pretty clothes, nothing that my kid self cared about.
But on a rewatch last year, with some age and maturity (and actually paying attention), I finally realized that this is THE slow burn romance to end all slow burn romances.
Just scrolling through the other Letterboxd reviews really shows how perfectly this film lets that slow boil build. People are quoting scenes, writing in all caps, declaring that this is true love and that nothing else will ever top it. And I can only agree with them.
But this film is more than just romantic quotes to post on social media. It's an absolutely beautiful period piece and adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.
Everything about this film screams passion, and everyone involved clearly had read the book and loved it.
The soundtrack, costumes, set design, and even the camerawork itself are absolutely beautiful. Every wide-angle shot showcasing the cast is framed like a painting of the period, very Barry Lyndon-esque (although i haven't yet watched it).
And honestly, watching it now, I get why people hold onto this story so tightly. It’s thoughtful, gorgeous, impossibly romantic, and made with so much care that you can feel it in every frame. I spent years brushing it off, but somewhere along the way it quietly became one of the films I treasure most. I guess some love stories just take a little longer to reach you, but when they do, they stay.
