Bugonia
Bugonia is a 2025 Sci-Fi dark comedy made by cult Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. We follow two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the CEO of a major company as they are convinced she is an alien who wants to destroy Earth.
Lanthimos puts his absurdist touch all over the movie, the wide-angled cinematography is visually precise and unsettling, with the detachment fitting the theme of paranoia and making it gripping. The framing and symmetry in every scene is clearly focused and satisfying. The design is also sharp and well-done, with the contrast between corporate minimalism and grimy captivity spaces being strong. The sound design and music both greatly support the movie: silence and ambient noises like the humming of bees create unease easily, while the loud instruments enhance the surreal tension. The acting performances are all top-level: everyone is controlled and committed, Emma Stone as Michelle always keeps the audience guessing, while Jesse Plemons as Teddy and Aidan Delbis as Don are both perfectly unstable. The whole cast has amazing chemistry and stays tonally fitting and believable, while Michelle and Teddy are both quietly menacing.
The plot is where the film lost a lot of its value for me, I think it could have been honestly outstanding thanks to compelling psychological tension, the well-done themes of trauma, control, and delusion, visual and narrative clues, intriguing dynamics between characters, and intense unpredictability. However, everything fell apart because of the ending. I would have been really impressed with a twist revealing that Teddy caused the death of 3 people out of pure delusion, and that Michelle played her cards right to escape. However, the decision to make her actually an alien undercut the tension, Teddy's responsibility was diluted, and the conclusion being every human dying felt really silly, robbing the story of all of its ambiguity and tension, shifting from a more abstract, almost cartoonish scenario.
Overall, Bugonia is a superbly produced and directed film that is brought down heavily by its cheap feeling ending. The narrative decisions kept it from reaching the level of impact it could have because of the disturbing tension and excellent performances.
