Mercy
38/100
A five stars in entertainment value, but it loses me in the final act. It goes from a film critiquing AI to defending it, and the ai randomly becomes considerate and empathetic with no explanation which was a bit jarring and lost it a lot of the tension. I thought it’d be far more impactful if the ai had remained as emotionless and strict throughout. Also found it odd how at the end the guy who’s brother got fucked over by the AI system was treated as some crazy weird guy and the ai was presented as the good guy. Odd end to the film that felt wildly different to the tone throughout the rest of the movie.
BUT as far as entertainment goes, it was a 10/10, had me literally on the edge of my seat trying to guess what the next twist would be/who the murderer was. IMO it’s a film that should really be seen in a theatre, you could FEEL the explosions and gunfire, and the timer really added a layer of tension to the film , with you constantly doubting if Chris is going to survive.
If you’re in it for an entertaining murder mystery , I’d fully recommend. If you’re in it for a social commentary and nuance, would not recommend (at least I wouldn’t recommend the final act). Solid film overall tho and I don’t fully understand the backlash, I think the ending could’ve been written better but I think what they were getting at was this ai system is no better than a human, as it’s superiority was built on the idea of it being infallible, so it was the (at the start of his arc) Naive Chris realising this system he presented to the world as flawless, has many flaws. And that when it comes to morality there’s no objective good or bad. Sadly, they wrote the ending quite poorly so it’s not conveyed very well. Overall though great film and I really reallly really enjoyed myself in the theatres
