yes it’s a typical colonizer fairytale… but i raise you this:
* incredible cgi for its time (that still holds up)
* biology as a conduit for religion (we’re talking about literal mother nature here)
* sexy blue humanoid aliens.
* a gripping performance from zoe saldana (when the home tree falls, so do the tears)
* a phenomenal score that i still listen to, to this day (i literally bought the vinyl for Jake’s First Flight alone)
* nostalgia. duh.
* an incredibly immersive backdrop including but not limited to:
- a fleshed out fictitious language you can actually learn for yourself
- bioluminescent environment AND CREATURES (i cant stress enough how cool the pandorian flora and fauna are- it’s like the main selling point of this movie. i need to ride an ikran rn)
- multiple cultures/clans with totally different customs (that will only be expanded upon in sequels)
- rad ass helicopters and mech suits
in spite of some pitfalls (unobtanium? really?), the world James Cameron creates is extremely compelling. once the movie ends, i’m left longing for pandora. the real world is so boring in comparison! I WANT TO GO TO THERE!!!
