riding broncs didn’t put the down payment on this place.> if you would’ve hung on for a little longer it might’ve.> that’s a big if.> yes sir.as someone who deeply adores mark maggiori’s art, cowboys, and the human condition, this was just one of those movies that spoke to me. it fit like a puzzle piece into my soul. I absolutely did not think i was gonna cry by the end of this. It was predictable and i thought because i knew what would happen it wouldn’t affect me so deeply. and then they panned to true’s chaps with the little video game hearts on it…. and well i started genuinely balling my eyes out.
nonlinear storytelling is usually not my favorite but it works here, and very well. it seems like we are experiencing the world through true’s broken memories. every scene is important and the flash forwards parallel his internal struggles. my favorite is when he finds respite in the shack, coinciding with his first meeting with ali, highlighting the importance of their relationship amid the torrent of his deteriorating condition, family tensions, and uncertainty.
nobody talks about this movie but it’s beautiful (emotionally and visually) and Russell proves he’s more than just a nepo baby, he’s fantastic.
