Get Out
This is one of the most stunning and well crafted commentary films I have ever seen. The array of symbolism - such as the blind man serving, in my interpretation, as a representation of white people who have the privilege to say they “don’t see colour” whilst still willingly or subconsciously participating in the oppression of black people - gives the audience much to think about. This film plays with your expectations in such a crushing way, it is painful at times, terrifying at others, whilst not only offering a thrilling story but also an amazing social observation.
I also admired the ending. Whilst the alternative may have been more realistic (sadly) and fitting with the narrative, it is undoubtable that POCs are owed a happy and satisfying conclusion after witnessing such a confrontational black trauma film, especially since this is not often given in cinema. I find that it does not take away from the overall message, and while the alternative ending would give much more of a gut punch to white audiences, it still resonates.
