Napoleon Dynamite
Perhaps I am blinded by nostalgia. Perhaps this is like the twentieth time I’ve seen this movie. Perhaps Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best cult, awkward teen comedies out there.
This film is the definitive low-budget comedy that had many unknown actors, writers, and production crew at the time. It doesn’t have flashy effects or spectacular set design. It just feels, well, real.
To add onto that realness is the fantastically written cast of characters. The titular star of the film, Napoleon, is one that is iconic on his own. From his monotone, slightly irritable voice, to his lanky, outdated fashion choices, he is truly a unique character. And everyone else is unique, too! We have an inept uncle who is stuck in the past, a crew of rude jocks and bullies, a brother who has hilarious character development through the film, and so much more.
The story doesn’t really have a clear plot line. More so “a day in the life” that grows into various smaller plot points with their own resolutions. The beginning clearly establishes who everyone is, what their lives are like, and the quirks of their environment. And yet, the ending is satisfying and wholesome. It’s not overcoming these awkward teen years, but instead embracing them. It’s a great message and a very comforting movie.
However, the hilariousness of the dialogue and their characters is what really shines in Napoleon Dynamite. Nearly every scene I found myself laughing at something. Whether it be the geeky ramblings of Napoleon and the outlandish dreams he has, or the minute, awkward quirks of the other characters. Even small details like their grandma’s shirt have funny messages. This movie was clearly a labor of love.
Overall, Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorite comedies of all time. It is quirky, hilarious, and has a cult of fans like myself who find themselves rewatching it over a dozen times.
