Seconds
Well damn. I’ll need to watch Seconds a couple more times.
What incredible stuff this is. The cinematography and directing, and not to mention the score stand out to an insane degree. Then are super dynamic and interesting. It makes me wonder why it got buried with age.
Another thing is that it points out a very critical feature of the sci fi genre: just because it’s sci fi doesn’t mean it has to be grand in scope across great distances and span societies. That’s how it loses personality and becomes convoluted. But Seconds is something that stays from the perspective of Wilson the entire time, often even the camera itself. At times it’s as simple as it needs to be and other moments comes with great depth, mostly in character. If there’s any movie that I would love to be remade, but absolutely shouldn’t, it’s this. Because I want MORE to this world, as much as I know it would self destruct immediately.
So yeah. Let Sci fi be small. Coherence is also a great example of that. It really shouldn’t be an excuse to make CGI spectacles, in fact, the CGI spectacles make one miss the point of Sci Fi, to make something fucking insane on ALL levels, not just visuals.
