Weapons
This very well may be the best horror film of the year. Zach Cregger is creating a genre of horror that feels fresh, exciting and downright terrifying. It is a worthy follow up to Barbarian that not only carries over the same tension and unpredictability, but amplifies them into something bigger in scope without losing that intimate and unnerving feeling.
The way the story winds through this suburban town and its residents was a treat to watch, blending smart humor with disturbing elements, all culminating in a big reveal that still has me feeling scared, anxious, and looking over my shoulder as I walk home from the theater..
Julia Garner is a gem and as an Ozark fan, I am truly ecstatic that this is now the third movie I have seen her in theaters this year!! Her performance in this film does not disappoint, and with how the story plays out, I almost wish we got even more of her.
But I think what I loved most about this film is how it feels like a fairy tale or a scary campfire story brought to life. The narration and chapter like segments weave together so well that by the end, I am left craving more from the absolute insanity that ensues.
Weapons is a movie that will stick with me not just for its concept, structure and the wild ride it took me on, but also for the fear and deep uncomfortable feeling I felt throughout the entire third act. It is a perfect reminder of why horror is my favorite genre and I cannot wait to see what Cregger cooks up next.
