Steve
i guess im left with a lot of feelings of heaviness and hurt i think, i definitely dont think significant improvement has been made to schools aimed at helping and rehabilating teenagers with a great amount of difficulty and thats hard to digest.
i thought how shy’s anger and explosiveness was favoured over his depression and deep sadness when he was being filmed and that showed that the documentary makers wanted to paint these teenagers in a negative light, almost as a justification as to why the school was going to be shut down. i also think the excessive filming of the boys fighting did anger me a little, regardless of whether a person is exhibiting behaviour you dislike that doesn’t negate the fact that they need support and care to rehabilitate them. for most people in fact they’d see schools like this and think out of sight out of mind.
the parallel’s between shy and steve made it hard for me to look away! steve’s insistence on advocating for the school and boy’s wellbeing made me think that for sure there are teachers like steve who also probably have alcohol dependency problems, i think both of them struggled to be here (evident from both their behaviour) and i hoped they were both still able to navigate a super fucked system and come out even remotely better than before.
i really liked this movie, and cillians acting is always top tier!!!
