Obsession
Went in knowing all the spoilers. What stood out most is the pacing is so much better than most horror movies; my brother pointed out that the people who made it usually do comedy, which made it make sense. It hits all the beats of a comedy while being horror and without losing any seriousness.
So many people talking about how Nikki acted like x or y; she acted like a rape victim because that's what this movie is about, and I think it leaves questions when it was her and when it was Wish-Nikki. Did Wish-Nikki hurt herself with the bottle because Bear was away/didn't love her enough or was it a moment of real Nikki having control and her immediate thought is to try and kill herself. Is being gross Wish-Nikki being weird, or real Nikki's only defense mechanism that she can do while wish-Nikki isn't letting her move away from the door to do anything else. Is that a combination of wish-Nikki and real Nikki standing in the corner, was real Nikki huddling scared crying in the corner as far away from Bear as she could be in the room, but wish-Nikki having enough control to hold her there? I don't think the horror is she suddenly came to; I think the horror is she was conscious the entire time just without control. Which works equally well as a true 'possession'-type plot and as a metaphor.
