Into the Wild
Beautiful film with a beautiful message;
Happiness is only real when shared.
In a way I find it kinda ironic how this all was turned into a movie. Imagine running away from home to escape the materialist hell you live in only for your life and death to be turned into another piece of capitalist media that people provide off of. Not saying this film was made in bad taste or anything because they definitely portrayed his story in a very beautiful and respectful way but it's kinda funny when you think about it.
Not that Chris himself was all that either, I highly doubt he would've truly minded it. There was many parts of his story that this film portrayed very differently but in reality this whole tragedy could've easily been avoided and it was truly foolish to think he could survive in the Alaskan wilderness with what he was prepared with. No proper gear, no fomer experience and a lot of bad decisiond. Alot of his struggles were potrayed somewhat lightly compared to how though it actually was.
Also I feel he somewhat misinterpreted Thoreaus philosophy. In reality he was a very privileged young man who left everything he had behind for an extremist view on modern society. Compared to Thoreaus who just highlighted living a simpler life. Like bro really thought he was gonna be the second coming of Ted Kaczynsky.
But then again you could argue that Chris did realize that in the end. That he realized he was foolish for thinking he could survive out there and that complete dissociation from society wasn't the answer. And I think that's exactly right. Especially what the wrote in the book in the end definitely highlights that. He ended up realizing that despite seeking solitude all his life, he only got true happiness from real human connection.
And despite everything I mean obviously it would be stupid to think he was just foolish. Considering what his sister has told the public it's clear there was a lot more to him and his goals than just that.
In the end Chris realizes that what the was seeking for the whole film actually wasn't what brought him true happiness. In the end, true happiness could only be reached through other people. Instead of his arrival in Alaska being what gave his life meaning, in reality it was the journey he had there, all the people he met.
And I think that's exactly why all the basic interactions between humans in this film were so important. They showed us and Chris how important for humanity it is to connect with one another instead of seeking isolation from society, no matter how grim it is.
I actually really liked all the interactions in this movie. They all felt very pure and human and it was just very unique compared to other movies I've seen.
In the end he ends up dying alone in the wilderness. Whether it was bad luck or poor decisions he ends up dying on his feat to be freed from modern society.
This was a very beautiful and touching story and the fact that it's based on reality makes it even better.
