Psycho
I fear i might've judged this film waayyy too early
I don't know how i went all my life with basically zero spoilers of this whole film but I've always kind of just seen it as a pretty mid classic from the 60s. Now that i finally watched it though i can safely say this is a masterpiece.
Everything was just perfect. The acting, atmosphere, characters, writing, dialogue, filming,, etc. I can't think of a single bad thing i have to say about this. The story line was so interesting and the twist were just perfect. Killing off the supposed main character in the first hour was an insane move but so detrimental for the film. For a movie that's black and white made in the 60s, this is actually very captivating.
I do have to highlight Norman Bates as a character was insanely good. Even at the start you get this weird off putting feeling from him, and while he does start acting out more as the movie goes on you could never guess his true role in it. He's just so creepy.
At the start he seemed almost autistic with the way he was acting but the plot revealed him to be closer to a dissociative disorder. While the terminology and portrayal are a little bit outdated I still think it's crazy how they managed to put this kind of depiction of mental illness into a film in the 60s.
This is the first Alfred Hitchcock film I've seen and im really excited to watch more after this. The attention to detail and tense atmosphere were actually insane.
So many iconic scenes in one movie. This one definitely exceeded my expectations and as someone who barely ever gives movies 5 stars this one definitely deserves it.
