Sentimental Value
Finally got a second viewing of Sentimental Value in. If you wanna see my full thoughts, my first review is for you but here’s a little list of things i love about this film:
-Renate may give performance of the year here. Jessie Buckley obviously has the flashier role, but that repressed anger and sadness you can see in Renate’s eyes through Nora is just insane.
-Speaking of acting, this film becomes a total mess without Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. She is the glue not only holding Nora and Gustav together, but the film itself. I know I literally just gushed about Renate, but Inga might have the best performance in the film.
-The needle drops are so nutty. Cannock Chase closing this thing out is icing on the cake.
-Stellan Skarsgard does things with his eyes and brow that make you think you’re watching the greatest actor of all time even when he’s saying nothing. I’ve never seen so much be communicated through only facial expressions.
-Also the communication between Nora and Gustav. How when they speak it’s nothing but punches being thrown, but when Erik is given Irreversible and The Piano Teacher DVD’s for his birthday and they laugh. Or when they go outside after and smoke together. They get each other only when they do not communicate. You see it at the end too.
-That house is so gorgeous I would do nasty things to be able to live in that house in real life.
-This really feels like the perfect sister film to The Worst Person In the World. Nora is very much like a more mature Julie, and this feels like the exact same world just more mature. Even more mature for Trier, who feels so locked in while directing this.
-LOVE Trier’s use of narration. Im often against it, but it works so well here, and feels more refined and smartly used than something like The Worst Person In the World.
-The sisters crying together in bed might be my favorite shot of the year.
-love that Elle Fanning comes in, has like 5 total scenes with 2 absolutely incredible, show-stopping ones, and then just dips lol
-In a weaker year, this runs the table in terms of awards. I honestly think this film might be flawless.
