Eddington
ari aster really went for something different here, and it actually works, it’s like a dark, twisted western set right when the world was starting to fall apart during covid, joaquin phoenix is basically dragging you through this whole mess, and you kind of hate him and get him at the same time, it’s uncomfortable in that way aster loves to make things uncomfortable.
the movie isn’t loud with its message but it’s definitely there, you see all the paranoia, the blame games, the conspiracies, the “i’m right, you’re wrong” energy that was everywhere back then, and it’s cynical as hell but somehow still funny in the most messed up moments, it shows how people can be fragile, stubborn, scared, and how that just brews something ugly. also can't believe katy perry was his breaking point..
it’s shot beautifully too, all dusty and quiet and heavy, like a storm about to break, and the cast really sells it, phoenix obviously, but even the side characters felt like they belonged in that slow burning chaos.
