Funny Games
I love love love this film so much. While the remake matches scenes 1 to 1, the original cast of villains are just infinitely more creepy because they simply look more ordinary and less like the evil prep trope. The way the film plays with viewers and its characters alike is so captivating, almost predicting its own audience and future reception. I feel this film has a lot of recognition for how disturbing it is, and many people are drawn to it because of what it is known for and yet each brutal death is done off screen, very little gore and just blood splatters. It knows what its audience will come for, and it teases them and acknowledges that we want to see something, we want to see the brutality but of course, we do not. Amongst the layers of commentary and critique, the film still remains highly disturbing in spite of the off screen brutality.
