Babylon
“It’s the most magical place in the world, wasn’t it?”
I really hated the first 10 minutes of this film—it looked so stupid, and I was wondering why Damien Chazelle was directing this movie. But then I saw Margot Robbie shed a tear. And from that point on, the whole movie changed for me.
The pacing really lacks in this movie, and for a 3-hour film, it sounds like it’s going to be boring. Yeah, some scenes feel pointless and don’t make sense, and by the end you’re wondering what the point of it all was. But honestly, I understand it, and I didn’t mind the filler. It actually shows how messed up filmmaking was back then, and it was super engaging.
The cinematography is gorgeous. Every scene feels so vibrant and fluid, and the costume design is amazing.
Let’s talk about the sound and music—honestly, I wasn’t surprised at all. We’re talking about Damien. Every song and instrument was an absolute banger in my opinion. The Sidney blackface scene was one of the craziest and most disturbing moments in the film. The way he looked so uncomfortable made me feel bad—it was incredible acting, and I’m glad he got a good ending.
The characters are really amazing and don’t feel bland. I love how each character has their own unique style, showing both the newcomers and the older actors coming to an end. Jack Conrad’s death was pretty unfortunate, and it’s crazy to think about not being “the face” anymore—something that really happens in real life. I love that the film captures that. Every character finds success, but at what point do they actually feel that glory, even for a second? By the end, it shows how messy it is to reach the top.
