Get Out
I’m pretty late to watch this and because of that I knew a bit about the movie and where it was heading, but because of this I was able to pick up on a lot and see how tightly crafted this plot is. Not a second is wasted, not a piece of dialogue is wasted and because of that the movie flies by.
The script is fantastic, as I said before everything is in service to the plot and the themes as well as giving a lot of insight into the characters. Without context you can understand a characters situation and intentions just through the way they speak.
Get Out is very political and it presented these themes and ideas brilliantly. There’s the more clear ideas of racial inequality, the fetishization of black men and white saviorism/virtue signaling but the film also touches on white habitus and white ignorance with how certain characters attribute the marginalization of black people to their ineptitude and laziness.
On the horror aspect the film also excels, its so tense in almost every scene. Even before the more explicit horror parts there’s always a feeling of being an outsider which captured Chris’ experience really well. While very different I had a similar experience having stayed with my white girlfriends family recently and the feeling of otherness from being in a different persons home as well as a cultural/ethnic divide and the movie shows that well before there’s any inherent racism with the parents actions.
Really liked this one👍
