Kyousougiga
this is actually one of my favorite animes of all time—if not, my favorite, period. every time i watch this film, i see and discover a new symbolism that itches something sooo good in my buddhist-shintoist obsession. and the line "what's wrong with just being there?" has stuck to me since i first heard it, because what is wrong with just existing and just being there?
kyousougiga has so many well-done themes that were so beautifully shown that i actually wrote a paper about it once (though not intensively, unfortunately). some favorites of mine: the butsugenbutsumo seeing the present and the future but never the past, the eating of the pomegranate damning yakushimaru into immortality, thus in a way, being the monstrous of all siblings, despite being the most human of them all, inari simply not knowing and simply not asking for help and his suicidal tendencies, inari's whole monologue, inari "finding humans making life disgusting because that's what he does", inari losing his meaning in life because there's nothing else to create, lady koto being so forgiving and so loving, the siblings being yakushimaru's "crib" (THE CRIB SYMBOLISM), koto just wanting to have a family, koto being the embodiment of the collision of buddhism, shintōism, and christianity, all in one little body, "i have brought with me the end, so why don't you be the beginning?", yakushimaru's episode, SO MANY THINGS i love about this anime, especially yakushimaru and koto being the beginning and the end, the drama CD with inari being called "papa"!
so, so many things. my favorite character is inari.
